An intaglio method where lines are etched using acid. The plate is coated with an acid-resistant material (called ground), through which the design is drawn to expose the metal beneath. The plate is then immersed in acid until the exposed lines are etched into the surface. After etching, the ground is removed before inking the plate for printing.

Cost-Effective Thin Nylo Plates for DIY Cliché Making
A practical, do-it-yourself method
using an exposure unit.
Handle positives with extreme care—any crease can cause a blemish.
Avoid touching the surface with bare hands; wear textile gloves if needed (Art. No. 14 to 45). Ensure the positive film and cliché are completely free from dust before exposure.
Attach the positive film right-reading, emulsion side down (offset film) onto the Aqua-Nylo-Cliché using adhesive tape. Place the tape as far away from the print motif as possible.
Expose the Aqua-Nylo-Cliché for 4 minutes.
Wash out the Aqua-Nylo-Cliché for 2 minutes in a washout tray with a cover (Art. No. 31 00 18) filled with water at room temperature. Use circular movements and no pressure with a plush holder and plush material (Art. No. 31 00 14).
Finally, rinse the cliché again with fresh water and dry it gently using compressed air or an industrial hot-air dryer.
